Welcome to the #reThinkELA chat! Tonight we’ll be discussing Student Choice & Voice. Please share your name, grade, subject, and location.
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:00 PM EST
Michelle Waters, 9-11th grade English teacher in Oklahoma, lead learner at #rethinkela
  • lsmellott - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:02 PM EST
#reThinkELA Shanna Mellott, all things English, Cache
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:05 PM EST
Q1 Why is it important for students to choose what they want to read? Don’t teachers/districts know best? #reThinkELA
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:06 PM EST
A1 Student choice in reading helps them learn who they are as readers, builds their confidence in reading, and helps them enjoy reading. Students who enjoy reading read more. #rethinkela
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:06 PM EST
Please remember to include #rethinkELA in your responses.
  • lsmellott - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:09 PM EST
#reThinkELA A1: When Ss are given choices, then they decide the purpose for the reading and what they will do with it. They will not feel like they are forced to read.
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:10 PM EST
Q2 Why should students choose what and how they write? That’s not the way it works in the “real world.” #reThinkELA
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1 Students who have developed their identity as readers are confident readers. Readers who are confident will be more open to new and different texts. #rethinkela
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:11 PM EST
A2 Student choice is writing is so important to help them develop confidence. In some ways, it shocks me how little confidence Ss have in their own writing. Then I remember my own lack of confidence... #rethinkela
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:12 PM EST
A2 I always served on school newspapers staffs, so had frequent opportunities to create my own writing assignments from single news articles to double page spreads of of opinion pieces complete with art & working with other writers/artists. #rethinkela
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:13 PM EST
These opportunities to chose my own writing helped me learn who I am as a writer and helped me build my confidence, even though I still struggle with that inner critic. #rethinkela
  • lsmellott - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:14 PM EST
#reThinkELA A2: Just like reading, we need to show Ss that writing is not just for a test. Do they have to write essays all the time? No! Have them blog, write a book, write poetry, compose songs, or write a movie script. They need to see the purpose for it.
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:15 PM EST
Q3 What does student choice look like in your classroom? #reThinkELA
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:16 PM EST
A3 So far, I have provided Ss with structured opportunities for choice. Write an essay on a topic of your choice based on several prompts, for example. I'd like to open this up more so Ss can create different products. #rethinkela
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:17 PM EST
Do you have any criteria setup -- like Ss need to try different writing types at least once? I could see some Ss who would want to turn every assignment into a Haiku... #rethinkela

  • lsmellott - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:19 PM EST
#reThinkELA A3: S choice starts the first week in my English IV class. Ss write a research paper & complete a senior project where they choose their topics, their modes of writing, and their reading selections. It’s all about what they want to learn and what they to do.
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:20 PM EST
Q4 What is student voice and why is it important that we recognize students already have one? #reThinkELA
  • lsmellott - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:20 PM EST
Yes, I give them a list. They have to vary their writing choices. #rethinkela

  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:21 PM EST
A4 I hear teachers sometimes say they want to give their students a voice. But that's not right. Students already have a voice -- they already have the ideas, the perspective, the words. We just need to help them see this and grow their voices. #rethinkela
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:25 PM EST
Q5 What does student voice look like in your classroom? #reThinkELA
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:26 PM EST
A4 Teach students they have a voice, nurture that voice, and they will make you laugh, make you cry -- and sometimes take over the world. #reThinkELA studentsstandup
  • lsmellott - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:26 PM EST
#reThinkELA A4: Ss need to be convinced that what they think is important. I always ask “What do you think?” I don’t want them just to regurgitate what I tell them.
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:27 PM EST
    Exactly! #rethinkela

  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:29 PM EST
A5 I work towards honoring each Ss voice. I "listen" as I read S work and try to help Ss tell their story using their words. I ask lots of questions & provide action statements that help students improve on their vision. I try not to put my words in their mouths. #rethinkela
  • lsmellott - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:29 PM EST
#reThinkELA A5: I have Ss discuss in groups at least once a week, they give speeches, for their senior projects, and they email, conduct an interview, or call someone about what they are writing about for class.
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:29 PM EST
Glad to see you here, @MrsSearcy112. Feel free to jump in! #rethinkela
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:30 PM EST
Q6 What are strategies you use to help students make choices in class? #reThinkELA
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:31 PM EST
A5 I also ask Ss to share everything they write for class with their groups. This gives them the opportunity to publish their work in a safe place, among friends. #rethinkela

Sonnets, movie scripts, blogs, songs, comic books, essays, interview questions, summary/reflection, or build a Google site. #rethinkela

A6 I've had Ss tell me that this has helped them get to know each other better, even those who have grown up together. They start to see each other in more meaningful ways, including as writers. #rethinkela
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:34 PM EST
Our last question is coming up in just one minute! #rethinkela
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:35 PM EST
Q7 What strategies do you use to help students realize they have a voice and want to use it? #reThinkELA
  • lsmellott - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:35 PM EST
#reThinkELA A6: For Ss to make choices, they must first prepare. I have them research, keep a journal of their ideas, collaborate with a group, discuss, and create an artifact.
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:36 PM EST
A7 I model my writing process for students, I work to honor their processes and encourage them as much as possible. I share with them my own struggles as a writer. I want them to know that even though I'm an award-winning writer, I struggle, too. #rethinkela
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:37 PM EST
A7 I make time to encourage individual writers as much as possible. Hard with 116 students, but I am working on it. #rethinkela
  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:38 PM EST
How to you construct the research process in this context? Do you provide materials? Topic choices? What does this look like? #rethinkela
    In reply to @lsmellott
  • lsmellott - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:39 PM EST
#reThinkELA A7: I think sharing their ideas, presenting their ideas, and collaborating with other Ss would help Ss with finding and sharing their ideas.
  • LSmith_ELA Feb 22 @ 9:46 PM EST
Student voice looks like letting them be their own person. It's letting them talk about what drives them, even if it's "off-topic." Passion = learning! You never know what essay response you may be stirring up. 😁 #reThinkELA

  • watersenglish - Moderator Feb 22 @ 9:48 PM EST
Exactly! Our students have so much to bring to the table. They just need to know we're listening and we care. #rethinkela

👏👏👏 They feel more valued when they are HEARD. And sometimes, we learn more listening to each other than listening to a textbook. #rethinkela

Absolutely! Textbook, what textbook? I think Ss are writing one on Twitter right now... #reThinkELA
