When I think of Servant Leadership I always first think of Christ. And when i apply that servant leadership to my life I sum it up as “It is never about me, always others” #oklaed
A1. A leader who recognizes that leadership is not about recognition or praise...but serving others, leading by example, a willingness to get in the trenches and work alongside those you serve. #oklaed
A-1 I first read an article on this when I first became a teacher in 1970 and it made a real impact on my teaching experience ever since. It is a total mindset that affects everything you do everyday. Relationships and caring is key to educating and impacting others. #oklaed
A1) I think of Servant leadership as Supporting the greater good even if it means sacraficing yourself or your ideas. Focusing on the cause not your team winning. #oklaed
A1: Not delegating a task or having an ask of anyone on your team that you yourself would not do. Not to mention getting in the mix and getting your hands dirty every once in a while to stay in touch. #oklaed
A1: You are a leader that knows your role is to serve a greater purpose than just your brick walls. As a school leader, you serve the kids, the parents, and the community in ALL you do! There is no room for hierarchy. It’s about the people you serve. #oklaed

A servant leader doesn’t do something that’s on their mind, they do something that’s on their heart. One may stand out by showing they want to do something or be there for a person or cause #oklaed
A2: Listening to understand, EMPATHY, humility, & a positive attitude on a daily basis.
The choice to communicate to a student that they are not alone as they may be dealing with a multitude of issues beyond their control...this stands out to me, making empathy a must. #oklaed

A2: Willingness to do anything they ask anyone else to do -- this says alot to me. Also, Sincere connections with others as people, not just a staff person filling a slot. #OklaEd
A2: They tend to be on the same level as everyone else, so they don't talk down to, they talk with. They stand out because they love input and progress and aren't stuck on rhetoric and numbers. #oklaed
A2) Selflessness, a genuine concern for the success of others or the team before their own goals, compassionate which leads to effectiveness through connection and communication. #oklaed
A2: My baseball coach always said that great coaches deflect praise when they win and accept blame in defeat. I'd say this applies to great leaders in general and especially to servant leaders. #oklaed
Selfless, Others First, lead by example, working for the greater good as opposed to what serves you best. Selfless stands out becUse you have to be willing to let go of ego, self promotion or getting your own way, #oklaed
A2: Willingness to do the job you are asking. Willingness to step into any role you manage. Willingness to keep learning so you can keep things fresh. #oklaed
A2: You are available to support your staff in a manner that allows them to do their job better or easier. Make a point to do bus duty, sweep the hall, give a teacher a bathroom break, cover a class so they can see their own kids play! #oklaed
I love this. I agree. Being open to people doing things not "your way" is huge. It can be difficult to give up the desire to be right, but that is a big part of servant leadership. #oklaed

This is true but I think we need to put an asterisk on it. The asterisk should say delegate if you are horrible at something. I have suffered this too many times at a leader doing for the team but they are horrible so it is redone in the end :(. #oklaed
A3: by not being afraid to admit when I am wrong, or make a mistake. By being human, real. Sharing stories to build the relationship. By not being the only voice that is heard. Being an active listener. #oklaed
A3) Great leaders empower their team to become great leaders. I give trust to the leadership to help instruct their squads to hit the standards that we have. I’m working to constantly improve myself so they will see that I’m working to get better so they can be better. #oklaed
A2 Leaders who strive to do better. Leaders who consistently ask their staff and Ss how things can be better. In education, it’s about a balance of leading AND serving #oklaed
A3: Ss have to trust that you know your subject matter, that you are willing to be wrong and to learn with them, and that in your room it is okay to struggle as long as we don't quit on one another #OklaEd
A3: In my class, I bring up the word, "family" a lot. My goal is make sure every student knows that they are a part of my community regardless of if we see eye to eye a lot. They are my "kid" and I will make sure that they feel loved, respected, and heard. #oklaed
Being a leader is not getting what you want. It is setting your own agenda and ego aside and bringing people together to accomplish more. True leaders elevate others, not themselves. #oklaed
A3 - I hope I lead by example. I admit when I mistakes. I create an environment where Ss can make mistakes & get a fresh start. I try to introduce Ss to new perspectives to gain empathy. I’m not perfect, but at the end of the day I hope I show my Ss that they are valued. #oklaed

A3: Newbie still, but so far...I show I care. I get answers with 24-48 hours or follow up if no answer can be given. I’m not a BSer, I keep it real. I don’t ask Ts to do busy work. I value their time but coach or offer feedback when I see a need. #oklaed

A4- maybe this is taboo in 2018, but every day I tell them I love them- even while suspending them. And 9 times out of 10, they will say it back, or better "i know and I'm sorry i disappointed you." #OklaEd
A4: as an admin, I have to create an atmosphere around me that is based on truth. I want a culture of excellence where Ts feel safe to try new things and where bad lessons are okay; you just redo it. #oklaed

A4: You may not remember their name, but you should get to know their facial expressions and body language. These two things will speak volumes and they will know you are listening! #oklaed

A4- #oklaed as a student my principals and teachers always give me a hard time i know that’s their way of saying i love you and i’m checking on you many teachers express it different ways but simply a high five or a how are you today could change our whole day when no one asks.
Though I’m not a teacher, I would make it a point to make a gesture of kindness towards each student. They need to know they are individually accounted for and worth the effort put forth by the teacher. #OklaEd
A4: morning meeting helps with this. Before starting our day and getting super busy.. taking time to unwind, unpack our bags and our ‘stuff’ so we can have a successful day. Especially on Monday! Monday’s are so Important to just listen to them. #oklaed
My students get to pick the lesson they teach, how they want to teach, what they want to teach. They are given permission to fail in this learning process. When they bring a good idea - we use it! #Oklaed
A4: We have to understand that sometimes doing the class/homework isn't the most important thing. Listen to their stories, stand with them in the pain, & empathize. Hold them accountable, but be understanding. Academia isn't always everything. #oklaed

#oklaed A3: I believe the only way to get students to want to follow your lead is to be a leader with demonstration. Personally I do not like teachers who are the kind to control their students because they believe they are the higher seed. Lead by example and I’ll follow.
A5: Love this question. One of the biggest revelations for me was that not every kid has a mom and/or a dad. Not every kid has parents. So I shifted to using the term adult supporters instead. #oklaed
A-4 Learn their name and speak to them as they get off the bus, in the hall, or on their way to breakfast. If they can start their day at school on a positive note, the whole day will be better. It is such a little thing to make a big difference. #oklaed
A4: Be intentional. Make the time, tell students you care. Listen and hug them if they need it. Even our high school kids need that sometimes. Have an open door policy. #oklaed
A5 - “I know exactly what you are going through”. Instead “I am sorry for what you are going through, but I am here to listen and help in anyway I can.” #oklaed
A5: What were you thinking? Maybe try something like “Why did you do (whatever it was)? Must S’s know what is right and wrong so if they were thinking they wouldn’t have done it. #oklaed
When I see this I think - I want to be encouraged to take risks and know that there is no punishment if it turns out terrible. When failure happens, I want someone else to give me feedback on things that I might have missed. #oklaed
A5: Telling a kid that they're "wrong" or "that's wrong" after answering a question just immediately puts them in a negative mindset. I usually say, "okay, you're almost there, who can help?" or "nice try! but you're just a little short." #oklaed

A5: For me any phrase that takes away from what the S is feeling. No wrong answers or failed results, just opportunities. I try to be aware of things that might "trigger" a negative response #OklaEd
A4. I can’t do it everyday because it takes a lot of time, but I really like attendance questions. Things like: “What’s an age you’d like to stay at forever?” Or “Who’s going to win bedlam?” Let each kid answer as you call roll. #oklaed
A5: Avoid an automatic "no." I had a principal tell me once, "We look for ways to say yes." How often is innovation shut down in the infancy stages? #oklaed
Comparison phrases that make anyone feel less than - Avoid humiliation at all costs. Best advice just stay on the positive side of life, be an encourager and one who elevates. If your words aren’t more + than silence then.... practice silence. 🤷♀️#oklaed
A6 - I think this can be difficult at times. We need to show grace while teaching appropriate behavior. The whole purpose of discipline is to change behavior. Sometimes you can do that through grace, other times, there are consequences. Know your S’s and T’s #oklaed
A6: well, I know it does because people think I’m crazy the way I talk about consequences. But kids are people, every circumstance is different. The kids know that as well as I do. I’m not here to ruin a kids day 🤷🏻♀️ #oklaed

A5: As much as possible, use the positive form of language. Expectations instead of rules, positive tones instead of barking and accusatory. It’s all in the presentation at times. #oklaed 🤷🏾♂️

A6) I'm new in my bldg. I admit when I miss something and own any mistakes. It shows Ts and Ss that I'll show them grace when they make mistakes. Continual reminders that no one is perfect and that we choose each day how we will respond to ourselves and others. #oklaed
A6 it’s not about getting or catching kids! It’s about teaching kids. Don’t we want to be provided the grace to learn and improved from our mistakes? #oklaed
A6: I depend on it every day - to help me accept what happens, but also to help other accept my mistakes! Grace is a life skill Ss should see and feel and replicate. #oklaed
A4- A servant leader greets students every morning rain or shine and uses that time before school to simply visit and check their status. Lunch time and the bus line are equally valuable. The first and last thing they see each day needs to be a positive adult who cares. #Oklaed
A5: Avoiding titles like “mom” or “dad” can be helpful, as not every kid is raised by a mom or dad. Maybe replace with “caregiver.” Would be open to ideas on that. #OklaEd
A6) If we have those relationships, we know where grace is needed. And if we foster those relationships right, we can see the Ss move to a higher point where grace is less necessary. #oklaed
Q6 . Grace to me is being polite,not to just your friends but to all your peers and acquaintances the whole environment of the classroom changes when negativity leaves #oklaed
A6: Have the grace to admit you don't know. Have the grace to allow others to struggle as well. Have the grace to let it go...this too shall pass #OklaEd
No - we have a list of topics. Students can sign up - but they have so much freedom its tough the first time they teach. My students are not used to this. Trying to get them to have a small vision of their future classroom...#oklaed
A6: Grace is restoration! Grace is the thermostat that gauges when to turn up the heat and when to cool it down. Some kids are used to being barked at all the time and just don’t need it. #oklaed#SandmanSensations
After a referenced her "parent" one time, a S got pretty upset because she didn't have either involved. I usually say guardian now all the time. #oklaed
Grace is that unmerited, unwarranted second, third, etc. chance if we love our kids and build true relationships this should prevail. Natural consequences may occur but every day is a new day when Ss return. #oklaed
A5: and whatever you do if you see a student not smiling, do not tell them to smile. You don’t have the right to demand that.
Instead maybe just say hi, how are you?

A6 - I also think our Parents need to see some grace. They are doing the best they can, just like we are. We should all be on the same team with 1 goal, what is best for the child, while maintaining safety and learning. #oklaed
A7: #oklaed my stuco advisor literally lets us “ run “ the school from behind the scenes nobody ever sees what we do but we put in a lot of effort so things go great and people have a fun time when we do a community service event we get to make it fun and get the job done
A1) Leaders pick people whose vision meets the general vision, and whom they trust to pursue that vision. Then, they listen so they know how to support, mobilize that support, and get the hell out of the way. I’m lucky that my admins do this. I feel validated. #OklaEd
A7 honestly—quite a few. Every organization and sport that I can think of participates in multiple school and community service projects, and there are a few schoolwide opportunities, too. I’d like to see more schoolwide options, though. #oklaed
This is so true but it has to be genuine. I had a principal once who would ask but really wanted to do one thing and always did what he wanted even after hearing. Just tell me if it is not negotiable. You are not winning me by not asking me genuinely. #oklaed
A7: At DCHS, we are given a choice to participate and help out in every event the school hosts. We also host a “big event”, a day of just giving back to the community. Beside just that, we are given many opportunities to help out in other ways in the community. #oklaed
A7: A lot of clubs talk about giving back. I'm a Key Club advisor, so my club members each commit to 50 volunteer hours per school year. It's pretty awesome! #oklaed
A5: I am sassy and sarcastic as the day is long. But, the best things I have learned to say is “ I am sorry” “How can we make things better?” “Everything is fixable, nothing is set in stone”.#oklaed
A7: My kids run all the student-wide events and I let them try new things. Even the crazy ideas like foam parties and blacklight shows. They also serve the community with the big event and wild week. Again planned by them #oklaed
A7 - Tutoring, some community service through things like helping at the Regional Food Bank, and raising money for causes. One thing I love is that our Jr. ROTC students help clean things around the school weekly. #oklaed#MDubLearns
A7: I always asked my kids: Give me 2-3 projects we can work on to make our school a better place. Then execute. Community wise, opportunities are endless. We spent a lot of time at our local nursing home, that was always a hit for my kids and the residents. #oklaed
A7: @kriscoop80 has been a key player in building a system and culture of students giving back as part of everyday life... it's literally every single day. Truthfully, Ts and Admin are guests in their building.

A7. One of my favorite parts of our beginning of the year PD was spending an afternoon at the Food Bank of Oklahoma. What a way to start the year with an attitude of service! #oklaed

A7) We have mentorship hours where Ss can work with Ts in a variety of service types. We also have buddies for Special Olympics. We will be implementing a variety of community opportunities (visits to the assisted living center, etc) this year as well. #oklaed

Q7 as a student I am giving the opportunity to participate in community service, from helping cut branches of bushes to box foods to family’s in need #oklaed
THere are some things that @usaodrovers do in their community - but cannot recall off the top of my head. All of the @EdmondSchools middle and high school participate in a HUGE fundraising week for local charities. #oklaed
A7: I have a call-and-response that I have used with my kids when dropping them off for school. It’s corny but it goes like this:

That is my biggest struggle. Walking in others shoes is hard. I know how I was raised...it was rough.
I know how I am doing it for my kids...they live like queens.
I DO NOT KNOW anyone else’s struggles and need to stay mindful of that. #oklaed
A7: Just an observation, but we tend to give more of those opportunities to "good" kids and not to those who may have made mistakes or have lost our trust. Like getting a zero, takes forever to dig out of it, but those are the ones we should give ops. #oklaed
A7 - We have plenty of school opportunities through various clubs, but I want to find ways to connect Ss to their community. I am doing a pen pal program this year w/my seniors & some 2nd graders - excited to see where that leads us! #oklaed

A7) I know our FFA has a leadership class that does various projects for the schoo and community, the NHS is required so many hours of service, we take my choir to the VA center in Claremore to perform for them a couple times a year. #oklaed
A7: Service learning class in special needs classroom, teen volunteers club works with Special Olympics, different clubs work to unload supplies for our food pantry, Teen Advisors of Norman serve community. #oklaed
A6- I do not believe I have ever corrected a child without telling them that I have been given more mercy and grace than I deserve and that I am extending that precious gift to them with expectations that we learn and correct behavior. #Oklaed
A7: there are sooo many! Students create artwork for residents & perform at our Nursing Home every month, we share kindness with local businesses in February, NHS students built fence after the fires..the list goes on and on! #oklaed
We have a lot of extra curricular activies at DCHS! Our leadership group hosts a Big Event where the kids can give back to their community and build them up. Our jazz/show choir goes and sings at community events. #oklaed
A8: We have a secret pal game where each participant does something nice for their pal at least every other week. Also, our Admin did a lot last year to help Ts feed appreciated. :-) #oklaed
A3: when students enter the class room, from experience i walk in and sit down and wait for an assignment to work on, it is a very “boring” energy that often leads to a stereotypical thing when students just put headphones in and talk in class.I feel as in environment to improve,
A4: being told i am wrong, students now and downs fear to raise their hands mainly cause they have fear of being told there wrong when the answer they feel is right, is wrong. Teachers should honestly have a conversation about the answer and than explain WHY to the student....
A8 - The very first committee I volunteered for and still enjoy the most is our Sunshine Committee which plans staff get togethers and fun things. I love building that camaraderie as a staff. #oklaed#MDubLearns

A8 - listenting to each other. Staff just like Students have home lives and go through things that affect their job. Be aware and offer support when needed. Some of your Staff wont tell you so you have to pay attention #oklaed
My Ss collected lotion for the old folks home last year. We have picked up trash in the past. Always looking for more ways to show them we can ALL be servants. #oklaed
A7: huge fundraising goes on at my school that helps the community. We participate in community recycling. And I love bringing community members into my classroom. So if anyone is interested... hint hint! :) #oklaed

A8: It's the little things...send positive emails to your colleagues on a regular basis. Leave notes and treats in their mailbox. Pop in frequently and ask, how's your day going? How are your classes? And, most importantly, how are YOU doing? #oklaed

A8: I always treat the new math Ts on our team to lunch during pre-school work. I did it when I was chair and continue to do it even thought I am not chair anymore. I just want them to know they are loved. #oklaed

A8: I try to be receptive to the needs of my staff. I like to be visible & involved in all parts of our school. This year, I saw my Ts needed a break on the 1st day bc they didn’t have a plan...so I read to classes so Ts could catch their breath on #okfirstday#oklaed
A8: Checking on them during their most stressful times or even if it's not and you just wanted to buy them coffee that morning. Being there for them all day/ every day. Constantly strengthening those friendships and supporting each other. #oklaed
A9. I am possibly the least graceful person you’ll ever meet. At some point in the first week of school I will trip over my own feet or spill water/coffee/food on my clothing. Nothing makes you seem human like biting the dust in front of a room full of teenagers. #oklaed
For years, my husband tried to get me to do chats and be involved. Honestly thought no one wanted to hear my mushy counseling stuff. Seeing tonight’s chat makes me super emotional. #OklaEd
A9 - I have a huge advantage here. 4 of my 6 classes are filled with students I looped up with, so they already know me well and we have a deep connection. The focus for me is getting there quickly with the other 2 courses by consistently being myself in front of them #oklaed
A9 - Write beside them. When I ask them to write their story, I will write mine & share with them. Bring my kids & husband to their events so they can see me beyond “teacher.” Make myself available. #oklaed
A8: Be there for each other. No one understands our kids better than the people who are in the trenches with us. What we do is hard, be the soundsnding board for each other.#oklaed

A9 last year, I shared about my return to grad school and the challenges that I was facing...seeing me walk (or stumble) through the learning process definitely made me more relatable and I intend to continue sharing that. #oklaed

We will be kicking off our student advisory so making sure all of us as leaders involved don’t forget to show our human non-position side to students too. I love to sit & listen to our students , visit w them, laugh, high five etc. Spend more time as a start. #OklaEd
A9: if I’m obviously stressed or having a bad day, I tell my Ss why if possible. Working problems with them and I make a mistake, I wonder out loud why I did that. #oklaed
A9) Again If you are being honest and open in your relationships with the Ss(in the most professional way of course) then they will see your weakness but if they see you working to get better, that will foster those relationships too. #oklaed

Q9: Being willing to admit that I'm wrong and apologize if I overreacted in a situation. Admitting that I don't know that answer but assuring them that I will come back with one. Also just laughing at yourself if something happens and it's funny. #oklaed

A8: by being flexible and stepping in whenever I am needed. At my school we truly are family and we do all the things to help each other out. Covering a duty, donating sick days, babysitting, making copies. Etc #oklaed work as a team with the whole school not just yours.
