  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:34 PM EST
    Q1: What is a formative assessment? #PatinsIcam
  • BevSharritt Feb 6 @ 8:34 PM EST
A1: an assessment that will shape or form your instruction immediately after the assessment. #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:35 PM EST
A1: Formative Assessments are OUTCOME based and allow Ts to see how a S is progressing. #PatinsIcam
  • VickiW823 Feb 6 @ 8:35 PM EST
A1: …the planned, continuous process teachers and students use to reveal learning, analyze learning, and adjust instruction and learning strategies to enhance students’ achievement of intended outcomes. -DOE #PatinsIcam
  • joyzabala Feb 6 @ 8:35 PM EST
So good to have seen you all last week! This topic is a hot one! #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Feb 6 @ 8:35 PM EST
What did we call informed decisions before we had formative assessment. hahaha #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:35 PM EST
I love the way you phrased that! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @BevSharritt
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:35 PM EST
It was FANTASTIC to see you! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @joyzabala
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:36 PM EST
Q2: What is the difference between a formative assessment & summative assessment?#PatinsIcam
  • VickiW823 Feb 6 @ 8:36 PM EST
A2: During (formative) versus after (summative) instruction. #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Feb 6 @ 8:36 PM EST
A1: Any way a teacher assesses where a student stands in learning the chosen material. #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:36 PM EST
Right? Informed decisions rule the world! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @JulieHKuhn
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:37 PM EST
A2: Formative Assessments are ongoing. They help show progress and come in many forms. Summative Assessments are usually standard based and measure overall understanding of a larger unit. #PatinsIcam
  • jconradslp Feb 6 @ 8:37 PM EST
A2: formative it like when the chef tests the food while it's cooking, adjusting and noting it over time. Summative is when the guests try the food at the end. both are important #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:37 PM EST
Of COURSE I love this analogy!!!!! Great one Jessica! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @jconradslp
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:37 PM EST
Q3: Are formative assessments teacher or student focused? Please explain. #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Feb 6 @ 8:38 PM EST
A2: Formative is a frequent and anytime thing. Summative is at the end. #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:38 PM EST
A3: Absolutely Student focused! They are intended to check for understanding and to help T’s know what needs to be reinforced and even shown in multiple ways. #PatinsIcam
  • BevSharritt Feb 6 @ 8:38 PM EST
A3: I think both because it is a critical link between the teacher being able to shape instruction around the results of what student info they get. #PatinsIcam
  • VickiW823 Feb 6 @ 8:38 PM EST
A3: S-focused in terms of gathering data about Ss current level of understanding and gaps in that understanding. T-focused in terms of using this data to inform instruction and next steps #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Feb 6 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1 and A2: Formative assessment can include more students with disabilities in the same assessment. #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:39 PM EST
Q4: Why should we use formative assessments? #PatinsIcam
  • VickiW823 Feb 6 @ 8:39 PM EST
A4: We need to be informed in the moment of instruction so we can determine how best to move forward #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:40 PM EST
Shaping the instruction is something that I did not perceive happening when I was a kid...suddenly you were in the weeds and no one was even there with a weed whacker! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @BevSharritt
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:40 PM EST
A4: I think the worst thing would be for a T to learn too late that a S was struggling or frustrated. Done correctly, the S never feels embarrassment and failure. #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:40 PM EST
    Mindful teaching Perhaps? #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @VickiW823
  • joyzabala Feb 6 @ 8:40 PM EST
We have the concept down! Sometimes we get hung up on the more “formal” formative ones and forget professional judgement. #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Feb 6 @ 8:41 PM EST
A4: Formative assessments validate our teaching. Without them we would not be sure the students were progressing towards the goal. #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:41 PM EST
This is the cold sad truth...we are a country focused on ONE test versus the daily tests and moments of inspiration! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @joyzabala
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:41 PM EST
Q5: How do formative assessments support Ss during the learning process? #PatinsIcam
  • jconradslp Feb 6 @ 8:42 PM EST
But I think we have lots of excellent teachers and edu leaders who think differently! #PatinsIcam
    • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:41 PM EST

  • PATINSSandi Feb 6 @ 8:42 PM EST
  • BevSharritt Feb 6 @ 8:42 PM EST
A4: Great podcast from the #cultofpedagogy on feedforward (formative assessments) and feedback. Brains (at any age) tend to shut down with a cortisol release when given feedback. #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:42 PM EST
YES! I just want policy makers to understand it too! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @jconradslp
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:42 PM EST
A5: Checks and Balances for understanding are a huge benefit! Taking away the pressure of a high stakes test being the only measure of understanding is also fabulous! #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Feb 6 @ 8:42 PM EST
A4: Formative assessment gives us a variety of means to answer the question, "How do we know what they know?" #PatinsIcam
  • jlfahlbush Feb 6 @ 8:42 PM EST
A4: Little late to the game, but formative assessments are necessary for progress monitoring and check-ins on your teaching & their learning #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:43 PM EST
I need to check this out!!! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @BevSharritt

    Hi Jena!! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @jlfahlbush
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:43 PM EST
Q6: How important is to keep track of the data received from formative assessment? Why? #PatinsIcam
  • jlfahlbush Feb 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
Hey hey! Sorry I'm running late #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @RachelH872
  • BevSharritt Feb 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
A5: you can learn where there may be content or skill gaps that need to be retaught or given more emphasis, but also where skills/knowledge are strong, and can be amplified #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
A6:The checks for understanding are every bit as important as the bigger assessments and show true pictures of understanding...esp if a student has test anxiety or working memory issues #PatinsIcam
  • BevSharritt Feb 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
    oops A6 #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Feb 6 @ 8:45 PM EST
A5: Like any data, you have to know what the outcome is. What is it you want to measure? How will it change behavior? #PatinsIcam
  • jlfahlbush Feb 6 @ 8:45 PM EST
A6: Yes, definitely a good idea to track formative assessments as well. The great thing is you don't have to assess all of your students at the same time on the same day! #PatinsIcam
  • VickiW823 Feb 6 @ 8:45 PM EST
A6: Daily, ongoing, informal assessments provide valuable information for both Ts and Ss. Record keeping is a must. #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:45 PM EST
Absolutely! It is not always about seeing the deficit...it is about celebrating what was really received well and WHY! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @BevSharritt
  • jconradslp Feb 6 @ 8:46 PM EST
Think about the feedback you're giving. Feedback (doesn't mean a grade! or a number!) goes straight back to @BevSharritt 's comment, don't shut the brain down, give opportunity for growth mindset! Amazing what you can do without grades/% correct #PatinsIcam
    • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:43 PM EST
Q6: How important is to keep track of the data received from formative assessment? Why? #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:46 PM EST
Q7: What can you learn as an educator when doing formative assessments with your Ss? #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:47 PM EST
Absolutely true! Feedback is definitely a vehicle for growth! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @jconradslp, @BevSharritt
  • VickiW823 Feb 6 @ 8:47 PM EST
A7: what makes sense 2 them, potential gaps in their understanding, faulty assumptions u might have made, where to lead instruction next #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:47 PM EST
I love the FLEXIBILITY of this!!! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @jlfahlbush
  • JulieHKuhn Feb 6 @ 8:47 PM EST

  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:48 PM EST
A7: Material that needs to be retaught or expressed in multiple ways. You can pinpoint individuals who are struggling AND what you did WELL! #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:48 PM EST
Q8: What are some ways u can allow Ss to engage in a formative assessment? #PatinsIcam
  • VickiW823 Feb 6 @ 8:49 PM EST
A8: S conferences, interviews, self-assessmnts, discuss w/ partners, daily logs, journal, exit slips, thumbs up/down #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Feb 6 @ 8:49 PM EST
One thing I like about formative assessment is the limitless variety of tools available. Kahoot, Plickers both come to mind. Adapt these to remove time constraints and motor problems and you have UDL tools. #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:50 PM EST
A8: There are so many creative ways to get a base for information without ever being shame based...I grew up with shame based assessment and I am so glad Ts do not think like this anymore! #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Feb 6 @ 8:50 PM EST
A8: Flip Grid, Seesaw or Show Me Videos to answer comprehension questions, Quizizz or Kahoot to privately check for understanding, #PatinsIcam
  • jlfahlbush Feb 6 @ 8:51 PM EST
A8: Reading interviews, turn & talk, Quizlet, Poll Everywhere, Padlet #PatinsIcam

Plicker is great because it is so low tech. The cards can be customized for easier student use and I bet if I think about it, we can rig it up to switches. #PatinsIcam

Q9: Please share an example of how u were impacted w ur instruction after administering a formative assessment. #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Feb 6 @ 8:55 PM EST
A8: Formative assessments can be as easy and informal as you can make them. So can Summative Assessments. The point is to hone in on what you are assessing. Try not to over assess. #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Feb 6 @ 8:56 PM EST
Formative assessment is such a useful tool because it really bridges general ed and special ed assessment. #PatinsIcam

  • BevSharritt Feb 6 @ 8:57 PM EST
A9: worked with K's today, and needed to know if they could touch & drag on the screen. They also needed diagonal. So we assessed & taught this prior to the app for reading, & were able to assist those that didn't have the fine motor yet so they didn't get frustrated. #PatinsIcam
