Application requirements


  • University degree in education or teaching (with proof of graduation). Review degree equivalencies here.

  • At least two years of full-time teaching experience with students between the ages of 5-18 in public primary, private primary or secondary schools.

  • Currently teaching (and not only within universities and/or language institutes in the last year).

  • Fluency in English, or English proficiency high enough to communicate effectively (oral and written) with your principal, colleagues and parents.

  • Driver’s license and at least one year of experience driving a car (not a motorcycle).

  • Non-U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

  • Availability to teach with Participate for at least two years.

  • Please note that there is no age limit to apply.

Application process


    1. 1. Review eligibility
      Before completing the registration form, please review the requirements above to be sure you are eligible.


    1. 2. Register online
      Complete the online registration form to provide details about your teaching experience and country of residence. Based on this information, you may be invited to complete an online application.


    1. 3. Apply online
      Complete the online application. Information required includes educational background, detailed teaching experience and accompanying family members.


    1. 4. Phone/Skype interview
      If your application is accepted, you will be invited to participate in a telephone or Skype interview to discuss your application and evaluate your compatibility with our programs.


    1. 5. Submit required documentation
      After a successful phone interview, you will submit the documents needed to complete all of the Participate admissions process.


    1. 6. In-person interview
      This is a day-long interview comprised of a morning group session, followed by individual interviews in the afternoon.


    1. 7. Program eligibility
      After a successful personal interview and submission of all application documents, we review complete application information to ensure eligibility for the necessary U.S. teaching license and visa sponsorship. If approved, you become eligible for a Participate teaching position. Schools begin hiring Participate teachers starting in March each year. We strive to find all teachers positions every year–however, some candidates do have to wait more than one year.


    1. 8. Consider U.S. teaching positions
      We share your information with U.S. school districts that are interested in hosting international teachers. We notify you if a school is interested in hiring you or speaking with you by phone or Skype about a teaching position.


    1. 9. Accept offer
      Some U.S. schools begin to extend offers to teachers as early as March or April, but the majority of schools hire their new teachers between May and August.


    1. 10. Obtain your visa
      After you accept a job offer, we will send you the documents you need to apply for a J-1 U.S. visa.


    1. 11. Travel to the United States and start your adventure!
