Our roots date back to 2009, when we started developing courses for educators on what would become the Participate community platform. We have always focused on the learning inside communities and the evidence-based principles to support adult professional learning and workforce development. As an iterative and continuous learning organization, we made the shift from LMS online courses to a Community of Practice approach to create authentic social learning experiences that connect professionals, grow organizational impact and scale learning initiatives.

Participate communities focus on using multiple engagement tools to build authentic learning experiences. Most traditional LMS systems will focus solely on courses or forums to guide e-learning opportunities, while community platforms rarely focus on the learning aspect of a community. Within a single learning experience in a Participate community, members have the opportunity to pick a personalized pathway of growth and engage with multiple users through courses, discussions, resource collections, direct messaging and more. Our tool was built for adult learning and collaboration, whereas LMS and and CMS competitors were often built student-facing first then adapted for adults.
