Create online communities that inspire learning, connection and growth.
Communities of Practice (CoPs) are collaborative spaces that engage community members in online or blended learning experiences around an organization’s educational goals. Think of a social network combining its power with a Learning Management System (LMS) to connect members in an accessible, intentional social learning platform. Communities can be used to scale an organization’s reach, build professional learning experiences, train members virtually and grow organizational initiatives.

Participate isn’t just an online course bank or social media feed, we combine the two to make the strongest learning communities possible. Using education, technology and adult learning expertise, we designed our social learning platform to meet the needs of adult learners and make learning online more fun. Participate communities are built to inspire learning, connection and growth.
Our roots date back to 2009, when we started developing courses for educators on what would become the Participate community platform. We have always focused on the learning inside communities and the evidence-based principles to support adult professional learning and workforce development. As an iterative and continuous learning organization, we made the shift from LMS online courses to a Community of Practice approach to create authentic social learning experiences that connect professionals, grow organizational impact and scale learning initiatives.
We've created a partnership cycle based on envisioning, building and nurturing your CoP. You'll follow the stages of planning, designing, launching and engaging your community alongside your designated community design manager. Learn more about our approach and partnership cycle here.
Participate communities focus on using multiple engagement tools to build authentic learning experiences. Most traditional LMS systems will focus solely on courses or forums to guide e-learning opportunities, while community platforms rarely focus on the learning aspect of a community. Within a single learning experience in a Participate community, members have the opportunity to pick a personalized pathway of growth and engage with multiple users through courses, discussions, resource collections, direct messaging and more. Our tool was built for adult learning and collaboration, whereas LMS and and CMS competitors were often built student-facing first then adapted for adults.
Nope! Our communities range from 10 members to thousands of members. It's all dependent on your organization and community's goals.
Our partners come to us with both scenarios. We can take your existing content and restructure it to fit virtual learning needs, or we can work with you to develop new content around your organizational needs and areas of growth. The upfront cost of content creation is reflected in the level of services, scope and time required.
We recommend you have a designated member of your team or organization serve as a community facilitator. We provide resources, best practices and learning experiences in a social learning community for continual growth as a community leader.
Don't have someone to facilitate? We offer services around community facilitation, priced per month depending on hours required.
Finding the right community software for your organization starts with your organization’s unique needs. For organizations looking to just do training online, an LMS would suffice. LMS courses provide the structure for staff training and company-wide professional learning. For those looking to have a resource bank of information and documents, a CMS is the right solution. A CMS is often used to share multiple files or resources with a larger group of individuals or organizations. Community learning platforms, such as Participate, often combine LMS and CMS features. Rather than being a space to just house virtual courses or just host information, community platforms engage members around organizational initiatives, topics or goals. Community learning platforms can be used for company training, resource sharing and a space to connect. Whichever platform type you choose, make sure it has tools for engagement and capacity-building related to the needs of your organization.
