About the Apps
Our best efforts to keep our children happy and healthy should always include a love for activity and physical education. As this is one of the most important aspects of early childhood education, it was regrettable that there are very few fitness-based apps for young children. I would hope that developers notice this lack of availability on the market and take the cue to start building more apps in this genre.
For the time being, here are the best of the limited bunch. One of the most popular apps - and for good reason - is Super Stretch Yoga HD. Available in both English and Spanish on the iPhone or iPad, this video-based animated app offers 12 different poses to practice, each with its own fun animal mascot. Another option for children who want more variety in activities is FitnessKids. The free app outlines up to 25 physical activities, such as jumps and stretches. The 'lite' version of this app is free, but to measure progress and add a competitive level, you'll need the paid version.
There are two apps that I would highly encourage parents and teachers to use with younger kids, as they may not be able to use on their own. Each offers a fantastic set of principles in the way of physical education. The first is Learn Gymnastics for Kids. This nine-chapter video reference offers lots of useful information, and a helpful gymnastics quiz to focus their learning. The second is C-fit XTrain - Classroom Fitness. As a part of a series (also featuring Yoga and Dance), this app offers a more structured guideline to personal or group exercises.
Finally I would be remiss if I did not mention Jump Jump Froggy. This app transforms exercise into an interactive game with animal animations. It's perfect for introducing young children to the concept of sit-ups, push-ups, and jumping around, all in the name of fun and healthy competition!
