DragonBox Algebra 5+
A fabulous algebra tutorial disguised as a fun problem-solving app
Publisher: WeWantToKnow AS

Why we love this app

There is no other app like this in the app store right now. It will teach children the fundamentals of algebra without them ever realizing that is what they are learning. The tutorials are excellent, and the app gently nudges the user along as he or she adds more techniques to the toolbox for solving increasingly complex problems without really needing to use numbers at all! If you have more than one child, or are using this in a classroom, the choice of avatars allows you to have several users access the app on the same iPad (at different times, of course), and work on their own levels.

What it teaches and how it works

Using cartoonish icons as tiles, the app divides the screen into two parts, and prompts you to "isolate the box" by using the rules it specifies to remove tiles. Opposites are labeled as "day and night" and can be dragged upon each other to make them viable for elimination. You can also choose cards from the bottom at later stages, but you can only add them if you add to both sides. By using logic, the user is able to deduce the correct moves to isolate the box.

Why your kid won't be able to put it down

The seamless way this app teaches while making it fun will capture your child's interest immediately. It allows for few mistakes, using graphics and sounds to alert the user when a move is incorrect, and it also will allow the player to "rewind" and redo if too many moves are used.
