Why we love this app
Understanding how and why the sun appears to move across the sky each day is a significant challenge for kids and adults alike. Sun Seeker offers a fun and easy way to visualize the apparent path of the sun for any date and time and from any location. The cost of the app may be prohibitive for some, but the product is extremely well designed and highly instructional.
What it teaches and how it works
Because of the earth's rotation, the sun appears to rise and set each day, tracing an arc across the sky. This path is different depending on the time of year and the place from which it is observed. Sun Seeker uses a variety of interactive animations and augmented reality to demonstrate this tough idea. Students can peer through the iPad camera and see the path that the sun is taking superimposed on the sky. With a simple swipe, they can change their location on earth or the time of year. There are a variety of views available including a map view and more traditional azimuth view. This intuitive app is loaded with data, and is perfect for use in an instructional setting.
Why your kid won't be able to put it down
Sun Seeker takes an abstract, difficult to visualize concept and makes it accessible through the use of engaging animation and real-time interactivity. Though the app only really explores the apparent motions of the sun, it does so in a powerful and fun way that will create a lasting impression on kids.
