Why we love this app
The underwater world of this app is a place where children can explore and learn the value of written numerals in an intuitive fashion before moving ahead to higher level math. Brightly colored sea life take focus in this otherwise muted underwater scene, where beautiful rays of light also inspire thinking in the science/nature category of early learning. Excellent visual and auditory tutorials empower young of math thinkers to begin the first levels of this game with complete autonomy. Increasing challenge levels offer plenty of room for growth but adults can control the ability level for new players.
What it teaches and how it works
This app teaches basic number value before increasing in complexity to teach number value within addition. The fish are hungry but they are also very “picky eaters." When players first confront a little fish it refuses to eat anything unless the food bears the same numeral as itself. Intuitive players figure this out. As players continue to drag drifting food toward the fish, they discover that specific matching numbers are not always available, yet this engaging fish is clearly hungry. Addition of numbers will be necessary to form the correct diet. Swipe three ones together to create 3. Brilliant!
Why your kid won't be able to put it down
The graphics and animation in this app are unsurpassed at making players feel needed as the little fish will approach food, but turn away if it is not the correctly numbered diet. When the player performs math correctly not only will the little fish eat, but it will grow and get beautiful new and fancy fin options. Kids love this game, and many teachers and parents find purchasing the upgrades are well worth it to let children move into subtraction and negative numbers.
