Why we love this app
A+ Writing Prompts is a fantastic way to create and complete interactive writing assignments. This pricier version of the app is chock full of prompt packs and generators grouped in five categories: Sketches, Scenes, Texts, Words, and News. There is unlimited potential for generating random and effective writing prompts (the developer boasts more than 1 billion), so educators and students will get far more than their money’s worth out of the app.
What it teaches and how it works
The app’s prompts include the specifics of scenarios, and tasks students with writing the story to include all of the specifics. For example, in the Scenes section students are provided with a Place, Character, Object, and a Date. In order to generate a new randomized prompt, just tap the Scenes button or gently shake your iPad. The Sketches section provides the genre (e.g. fantasy, adventure, comedy), the type of writing (short story, poem, etc.), and images of objects to include in the prompt. The Text feature is where students might benefit most, as it provides simple prompts, like “Write about three things that make you really happy.” This type of prompt leaves more up to the student’s imagination, and has an inherent grading structure (points for writing on each of the prompter's aims). The Words section provides a set of words to be used as inspiration or to be correctly used in a prompt.
Why your kid won't be able to put it down
A+ Writing Prompts has limitless potential, and we guarantee that even the stingiest of Middle School writers can find something interesting to write about. That’s the genius of the app -- while it isn’t customized for a specific age group, the vast number of randomly generated prompts results in something enjoyable for every student. Note: this app is designed for iPhones, but works well on iPads.
